History and Modern Growth

Originally incorporated in 1861 as Charleston, Lake Charles was given its current name in 1867. Prior to this time, the area saw its first influx of European settlers in the 1760s and was in fact named after an early French immigrant Charles Sallier. Timber interests predominated the slowly growing region until the mid-1800s, after which Captain Daniel Goos expanded both lumber and trade with nearby ports in Texas and Mexico. The population exploded during the 1880s leading to the building of ornate Victorian homes in what is now theCharpentier Historic District. Despite a devastating fire in 1910, the city recovered and saw further growth with the arrival of the petrochemical refining sector and, more recently, gaming and tourism.
